BOSWELL SISTERS – STORYVILLE VOL. 1 (of 5)

review-storyvilleBOSWELL SISTERS START AT THE TOP

This is disc one in the utterly brilliant JSP Boswell Sisters 5-disc collection, remastered by the great John R.T. Davies. Potential buyers should be advised that the Boswell Sisters did much of their hottest (jazz-based, usually uptempo) recordings right at the beginning of their career. So if one is looking to get into the thick of the controlled anarchy which The Boswells excelled at, they’d do well to start with disc one, rather than cutting into the series at a later date. In fact, the notorious Jack Kapp (founder of Decca) made attempts to reign in the Boswell Sister’s simultaneously-wild-and-high-minded musical conception not long after they began at Decca. It is to The Boswell Sister’s credit, given Jack Kapp’s power and ruthlessness, that such attempts generally failed. Nevertheless, the music made at the beginning of their recording career remains some of their most irresistibly hot and creative. This CD is the best place to start.
